Rules require that a party must  get at least  10% seats in the Lok Sabha . With elections held for 543 seats for the 17th Lok Sabha, the Congress , the second largest after BJP, must get at least 54 seats to the get the LoP status. With 50 seats , it would again not be possible for the Grand Old Party to get the LoP , status. It had the ignominy of losing the status.
Lot of soul searching is required if the Congress Party wants to make itself relevant again. Ironically, Prime Minister  Narendra Modi  is often equated with Indira Gandhi of the Congress when it comes to strong leadership.  But for a small state of Kerala, Rahul Gandhi led party would have found itself junior to the regional parties like its ally DMK of Tamil Nadu.
State after state, the Congress tally is in ones or twos, but for Kerala, Punjab and Tamil Nadu (for TN, it is helped by DMK).
